Wait

Approximately 15% of bedwetters spontaneously become dry each year. Your dilemma is that there is no way of knowing when this will happen for your child.

If you opt for the "Wait" option, there are some things to keep in mind:

Do not restrict fluids in the evening

This is rarely effective. In fact it is better to increase fluid intake. A child needs a full bladder to sense a full bladder. There is a risk of dehydration with restriction of fluids.

Daytime wetting

If this is present, it needs to be assessed by a paediatrician

Treat any constipation

A continually full bowel can put added pressure on the bladder. If constipation is chronic, see your doctor for advice and assistance.

Look for alternatives to disposable nappies and pullups

They are very convenient but do have several disadvantages:

  • the overall expense can be over $1,000 a year
  • bedwetting may be more prolonged because of the relative comfort of a disposable pullup
  • world-wide use of disposable nappies and pullups has become a major environmental issue
  • there is growing concern of the effect on future fertility of boys due to overheating of the testis inside disposable pullups.

If you are not ready for more active treatment such as a bedwetting alarm, consider using cloth nappies and nappy covers instead of disposables. The use of reliable mattress protectors and bed pads (see our DryLife Products) also provides peace of mind and eases the washing load. Bedwetting Solutions have a range of products for both children and adults.

Relax with your decision, knowing you and your child have options for treatment if needed.
